Wow. I can honestly say that I wasn’t sure what I was going to get with this book, but I was more than pleasantly surprised, albeit a tiny bit squeamish when I read the first unintentional death scene.
Kitty Collins is a social media influencer, though it appears she is a bit resentful of her origin story – it’s not as glamorous as the ones her friends have (daughter of a record mogul, adopted daughter of a media star etc). However, that not-so-salubrious but wealthy start (daughter of an abattoir owner) is going to help her as she starts a pretty violent and very successful killing spree.
Kitty is going to make it safe for women to walk the streets at night, giving them the chance to have the freedoms they don’t currently enjoy, such as wearing headphones when walking alone outside in the dark. And the way she’s going to do it…killing all those predatory men who think that if they buy a girl a drink she has to owe them something! Kitty is doing this for herself, for her friends, for those who have already suffered…She’s doing a public service really! Right?
The first death is accidental, though he sort of deserved it. The rest of them, they’re 100% on purpose and she actually seems to enjoy it, because she feels as though she’s not only doing a service, but she’s also doing something taboo and getting away with it. Though is she? Because there’s that problem she has with a stalker who seems to know about everything she does. They’re watching her every single move.
I loved the unexpected revelations, the stalker, and her dad’s disappearance when she was a child. All of this has made Kitty into the woman she is. But would I want her to be my best friend? Not so sure!
This was a really creative take and I loved that in the author notes Katy revealed she got the inspiration from a single thought ‘what if Patrick Bateman was a woman’, and just rolled with it.
